‘MumandDad’isa1/2scalesculptureofanagedcoupleonthelookoutintheirdressinggowns,asifsomethinghappenedonthestreetatnight,andtheywanttofindoutwhat'sgoingonfromthedoorway.Theirbodylanguageandfacialexpressionspeakvolumesabouttheirageandtheirrelationship.

Thisexhibitionspeaksaboutourgrowingpains,thesearchforidentity,thedifficultiesandawkwardnessinherenttoourexistence,butalsoaboutourdreamsandhopesforabetterfutureandthesearchforpeaceandwonder.

Inadditiontohiswell-knownlarge-scale,immersiveinstallations,sculptures,artfilms,watercoloursandtheatreandoperawork,HansOpdeBeeckhasalsobeencreatingautonomoussculpturesofhumanfiguresforanumberofyearsnow.

'TheHorsemanandotherstories'mainlypresentselaboratelydetailedhumanfigures.Theyaremostlydepictedinamomentofrest,orwhileperformingatrivialdailyaction.

'TheHorseman',alife-sizesculptureofamanonahorse,presentsuswithanenigmatic,nomadichorseman,afigurethatevokesbothtothelonelytravellerofalltimesandthehomelessmigrantoftoday,insearchofabetterlife.Hiscompanionisalittlemonkeysittingonhisshoulder,holdingaparasolinitshandtoprotectitsownerfromthesun.Thehorsecarrieshandyworktoolsontheflanksandsmallcollectionsofbanalaswellasmysteriousobjectsthatpresumablyareofgreatimportancetothetraveller.

‘TheBoatman’isalife-sizestatueofamanonasmallrowingboat,seeminglypushingtheboatawayfromabank.Like'TheHorseman',heisahomelessloner,amiddle-agedman,halfwaythroughlife,alwaysonthemove.Hehaspackedhiswholelifetogetheronthesmallboat;meansofsurvival,personalbelongingsandgoodsthathecanofferforsaleorexchangearestackedandtiedupinanimprovisedway.

‘MumandDad’isa1/2scalesculptureofanagedcoupleonthelookoutintheirdressinggowns,asifsomethinghappenedonthestreetatnight,andtheywanttofindoutwhat'sgoingonfromthedoorway.Theirbodylanguageandfacialexpressionspeakvolumesabouttheirageandtheirrelationship.

In2015OpdeBeeckmadeafilmwithpuppets,animatedlivebypuppeteersdressedinblack.With'Celeste&Egon'and'Celeste(smoking)',hetakesuptheconceptoftherepresentationofmanasadoll.Thedollsaresculptedfromwood,andthelimbsareconnectedbythetypicaldolljoints.Fortheartist,thehumandollcontainsafeelingofdefencelessnessandsilenttragedy.Inthework'Celeste&Egon'weseethevulnerabilityofthemaleprotagonistwhohasfallenandthehelplessnessanddoubtofthefemalecharacter.In'Celeste(smoking)'weseethefemalecharacteralone,inamomentofcontemplation,withthesohuman,simpleactofsmokingacigaretteandtakingabreak.

‘TheCliff(wallpiece)’featuresanadolescentcouplesittingatopaheadlandontheedgeoftheprecipice.Thegirl’sopengazelingersinthedistance,asifpreoccupiedwithsomethingbeyondthesetting,whiletheboy’sattentionisentirelyfocusedonher.Itisabittersweetimageofyounglove’svagarieslacedwithinnocenceanddesignedtoappealtotheviewer’ssentiment.Thestoryofchildhood,ofgrowingup,isrepresentedasaformofsublimeenchantmentpunctuatedbytheoverwhelmingperceptionofaworldnotyetlivedtowhichweareenticedtoreturn.ItalsohighlightsOpdeBeeck’srecurringconcernwithchange,wheredifferentstagesofourlivesarepunctuatedwiththeweightofwaitingbeforetransitioningintoanewphase–here,theadventoffirstlovesignalsthepassageintoadulthoodandthelossofinnocence.

‘TheHideout’isashowcasemadeattheartist’sstudio,withontheinsideasculptureofanocturnallandscapeonscale.Atthehighestpointoftheunrulyrockylandscapeisabaretreewithatreehouseinwhichalightburnsasifsomeoneispresent.Thebackgroundofthelandscapeisastarrysky.Thesceneappearslikeafairy-talelike,congealedmemory.

‘Lily’isasculpted,classicstill-lifeofamostslendertablewithadrapedtableclothandavasewithagracefulbranchwithlilyflowers.Theextremeverticalityoftheworkemphasisesitsvulnerabilityaswellasthefeelingoftheflowersreachinguptothesky.

‘Dog’isalife-sizesculptureofasleepingdog,averysimpleandeverydayscene,whichspeaksofthecalmandtranquillityofthepassingoftime.

Asawhole,thisexhibitionspeaksaboutourgrowingpains,thesearchforidentity,thedifficultiesandawkwardnessinherenttoourexistence,butalsoaboutourdreamsandhopesforabetterfutureandthesearchforpeaceandwonder.

HansOpdeBeeckisanarratorofstoriesbetweenthelines,withoutbeginningorend,oftenintriguing,generallymelancholy,alwaysintense.Atthesametimeheaskswhatspacestriggerinusand,throughtheatmosphericdensityofhisworks,leadsustoamorepreciseandintensesenseofperception.Hepullsusoutofoureverydaylivesandenablesustotravelintohisextremelypeculiar,highlyacraticworks,thestrangetimeofwhich,suspendedbeyondreality,allowus-paradoxically-tobecomethatmuchmoreconsciousofourselvesadourownlivingconditions.
